Teaching and Learning
At Coburg North Primary School, we believe collaboration, creativity, character education, citizenship, communication and critical thinking are vital for students in their development of coping in a rapidly changing world. The 6Cs serve as a lens to deepen and amplify learning so that students have the needed skills and attributes to thrive as personal, local and global citizens. We explicitly teach, model, practise and support the development of these global competencies throughout all learning experiences.
At Coburg North Primary School, students tackle real world problems with the aid of technology; work collaboratively with their peers, teachers and experts in the community; ask good questions; develop deep knowledge, identify and solve challenges, and share their learning with a purposeful audience.
Although key reading, writing and mathematical skills are taught specifically during focused literacy and numeracy sessions, Inquiry is embedded in all learning areas, whilst encompassing subjects such as Science, the Humanities, Health and Technology.

Student Led Exhibitions
A Student Led Exhibition is an opportunity for students to showcase their learning, thinking and pieces of work with a purposeful audience. It is a chance for attendees to honour the deep level of learning of each student and ask higher order questions about the thinking and learning involved. This exhibition promotes a high level of student agency as it empowers all students to take ownership of their learning. Students have had opportunities to decide what and how their learning is displayed and presented. Student Led Exhibitions are held annually at CNPS.

Differentiation
At Coburg North Primary School we provide a differentiated curriculum that recognises and responds to diverse student needs, addressing the specific requirements of students in relation to gender, special learning needs, disabilities and impairments, giftedness and students from language backgrounds other than English. When developing our units of inquiry we identify and cater for the differing needs of individuals and particular cohorts of students taking into account their personal interests and strengths.

Digital Technology
CNPS strongly believes in the importance of Digital Technology as a teaching and learning tool, enabling our students to participate successfully in the global community. We aim to embed technology seamlessly to allow for opportunities for students to be creative and work collaboratively, being developers of new content knowledge. In addition to developing the vital ‘6C’s’, we aim to develop the necessary skills for students to navigate safely online and create healthy online habits.

Physical Education
Health and Physical Education (HPE) is an important part of learning at CNPS. We create many opportunities for students to participate in a range of games and activities that develop their emotional, mental, physical and social well-being. There is a high focus on students developing their fundamental motor skills and translating them into individual and group game based play. HPE allows students to develop their problem solving and communication skills, whilst becoming responsible members of society.
Students are also provided the opportunity to participate in a range of fun activities and carnivals throughout the year. These include a Swimming and Water Safety Program, an Athletics Carnival, a Cross Country Walkathon, Ride2School Day, National Health and Physical Education Day, Footy Colours Day and Walk to School Month in October. These are wonderful opportunities for students to work as part of a team, support one another and show their house spirit.
Finally CNPS is a part of the SSV Coburg District, where students in Grade 5 and 6 participate in friendly inter-school sport competitions. Students are offered a variety of sports to choose from including basketball, softball, bat tennis, AFL, soccer, netball and Cricket. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to be a part of a team and build positive relationships with other students in the community.

Music / Performing Arts
At Coburg North Primary School we value the performing arts and make sure that every child has the opportunity to explore and create in a variety of ways. Each class has an hour a week for music and all students participate in a comprehensive sequential singing and instrumental program which aims to build a firm foundation for music making. Part songs and rounds are utilised to develop solid vocal skills. Students also use a wide range of instruments including keyboards, guitars, drums, ukuleles and percussion as well as digital recording technologies.
Students in grades Foundation to 3 can join the Junior Choir and those in grades 4 to 6 can join the Performance Choir. Both choirs perform regularly at assemblies, lunchtime concerts and in the local community. Children in the upper grades can join the 3/4 School Rock Band or the 5/6 School Rock Band. Choirs and Bands are unauditioned, however regular attendance is a prerequisite for taking part in performances.
A major school concert is held every year alternating between upper and lower schools. It gives all students the opportunity to perform and incorporates dance and drama. A smaller Christmas Concert is also held each December.

Italian Language & Culture
The Italian language program focuses on building students’ confidence and ability to use Italian to communicate. In the earlier years, the emphasis is on listening and speaking, progressing to reading and writing in later years. Students gain an understanding of how languages ‘work’. They reflect on their own culture and language, make connections and compare and contrast their life with life in Italy.
Students practise their Italian with activities like singing, games and role plays. They work on projects to apply their learning and use their Italian language in creative and meaningful tasks, such as cooking and gardening.
There are opportunities to participate in lunch time Italian clubs, Italian Choir, Team Verde (Environment Club) and pen pal programs. Each year the school community celebrates ‘Carnevale’ a colourful celebration of Italian culture with parades, displays, music, performances, sporting activities (bocce) and a staff spaghetti eating competition.

Visual Arts
The Visual Art program at Coburg North Primary School strives to develop and build the students’ ability to communicate themselves visually. Students are provided with a comprehensive Visual Arts program that exposes them to a range of mediums. They have the opportunity to participate in units of work based on drawing, collage & mixed media, painting, printing, threads & textiles, printmaking, construction and modelling.
In the early years of schooling the focus is on the art making process, students learn how ideas and thoughts can be magically transformed into pieces of art. Whilst learning how to use a range of materials and tools. Students are encouraged to explore and manipulate these materials to express themselves. They also learn to become viewers of art by responding to the artwork of their peers and other artists. Sharetime enables students to have rich opportunities to reflect and respond to artwork.
In the later years of their schooling, students are exposed to more complex techniques, which build upon their previous skills. They are exposed to digital art, by examining the work of contemporary artists, and inspired to create their own pieces, using iPads and various visual art apps. Students also learn about why art is made and how a variety of factors can influence the artwork that an artist creates. They are encouraged to go deeper and have critical discussions based on the artwork of artists, their peers and themselves. Consideration is made on how artwork will be celebrated and displayed within the school.
Students have the opportunity to join a Drawing Club and participate in the Annual Art Competition. We also run a small exhibition entitled the ‘Young Archies’, which showcases the Foundation students artistic skills. Biannually we run the Coburg North Primary whole-school Art Show, exhibiting the learning that all students have participated in.
