Transition Process - Primary to Secondary

The Education and Training Reform Act 2006 guarantees your child a place at their designated neighbourhood government school (local school). The department’s Find my School website allows you to find your local school based on your permanent residential address. The Find my School website is the official and most up-to-date source of information on school zones.
The Victorian government supports school choice. This means that you can apply to schools other than your local school. Schools will consider your application in line with the department’s Placement Policy and offer enrolment if there are available places. If schools have limited places, they will prioritise enrolment of siblings and students who live nearest the school. Year 6 to 7 Placement Timeline
This timeline includes activity descriptions and an overview of responsibilities to assist school staff with key dates:
From the start of Term 2, 2026:
Parents and carers can submit their Year 7 placement applications. This follows the release of the 2027 school zones on the department’s Find my School website and the publication of the Year 6 to 7 placement information packs.
8 May 2026: Year 7 placement applications from parents and carers are due.
18th May 2026: Primary schools send all initial placement requests to secondary schools.
15 June 2026: Secondary schools notify primary schools of all students accepted into Year 7 (first, second and third preference rounds) for 2027.
24 June 2026: Primary schools notify parents and carers of Year 7 placement outcomes.
17 July 2026: Written appeals from parents and carers are to be lodged with the secondary school.
4 August 2026: Secondary schools notify parents and carers of outcomes of appeals.
11 August 2026: Parents and carers confirm acceptance of offer with their primary school.
