This year, all of the Grade 4 students at CNPS have had the opportunity to extend their Italian by participating in the Italian Extension Kitchen Garden program, Nell orto e in cucina.
The students use Italian language while they are gardening (planting, watering, harvesting) and then again when they are cooking with the food they have harvested.
As well as talking about the tools and ingredients and the things we see in the garden, we focus on the different verbs we use while cooking and gardening.
This year nell’orto we have grown: la bietola (silver beet), gli spinaci, la rucola (rocket), la lattuga (lettuce), le taccole (snow peas), il basilico, il rosmarino, il prezzemolo (parsley), la salvia (sage) and il timo (thyme), as well as a few fiori (flowers) to help attract the right insects.
In cucina we have cooked: Focaccia, Pasta al pomodoro e ricotta, Ravioli saltati and Cannelloni con bietola.
